perform daily prayers (Salah) at work
Is this considered a reasonable adjustment under UK Law?
Overview
Muslims pray 5 times a day. During winter, 2-3 of these may fall within work hours. Each takes some 10-15 minutes.
For Employees
I need to take short breaks (approx 10 mins) to perform my daily prayers. I will ensure this does not disrupt meetings or urgent tasks.
For Employers
Allowing short breaks for prayer is a reasonable adjustment. A quiet space (meeting room, first aid room) should be made available if possible.
Key Considerations
- Can a quiet room or space be provided?
- Are clean washing facilities (for Wudu) available?
- These short breaks are comparable to tea/smoke breaks.
