wear a Cross/Crucifix necklace
Is this considered a reasonable adjustment under UK Law?
Overview
Banning religious jewellery requires a legitimate aim (e.g. safety, hygiene). A blanket ban on "jewellery" that catches religious symbols can be indirect discrimination.
For Employees
I wish to wear a cross necklace as a manifestation of my faith. I can wear it underneath my uniform to mitigate any safety/professional appearance concerns.
For Employers
Unless there is a critical Health & Safety or clinical hygiene reason, this should be permitted. "Corporate image" is rarely a strong enough reason to ban inconspicuous religious symbols.
Key Considerations
- Is there a snatch/snag risk?
- Can it be worn inside the shirt?
- Is there an infection control risk (e.g. clinical setting)?
