attend Friday Prayers (Jumu'ah)
Is this considered a reasonable adjustment under UK Law?
Overview
Employers should allow flexibility for Friday prayers (Jumu'ah), usually requiring 45-60 minutes around midday. The time can be made up.
For Employees
I would like to request an extended lunch break on Fridays to attend Jumu'ah prayers. I am happy to make up the time or start earlier/finish later on that day to ensure my hours are met.
For Employers
Accommodating religious observance is good practice. Unless there is a critical business need (e.g. emergency response with no cover), this should be granted.
Key Considerations
- Can the lunch break be shifted to coincide with prayer time?
- Can the time be made up at the start/end of the day?
- Is there a mosque nearby, or can a quiet room be provided?
