Wudu at Work: Washing Feet in Sinks

The awkward reality of Wudu in office bathrooms. Is it a health and safety risk? Reasonable adjustments for ablution.

The Issue

Before prayer (Salah), Muslims must perform Wudu (ablution), which includes washing the feet. In standard UK office toilets, this usually involves lifting a foot into the hand basin.

Common Complaints:

  • “Water all over the floor” (Slip hazard).
  • “Unsanitary use of hand basins”.
  • “Discomfort for other users”.

Is banning it discrimination?

If an employer bans using sinks for feet without providing an alternative, it is likely Indirect Discrimination. They are creating a policy that stops you fulfilling a religious obligation.

Reasonable Adjustments

1. WuduMate (Gold Standard)

A specialized low-level stool/basin unit.

  • Cost: ~£500-£1000.
  • Reasonable? For large employers or new buildings, yes. For a small cafe, probably too expensive.

2. Accessible Toilet / Tyrolean Basin

The “Disabled Toilet” usually has a standalone sink and more space.

  • Adjustment: Allowing permission to use this room for Wudu creates privacy and reduces mess.

3. Jug and Bowl

If no other option exists, providing a plastic jug and bowl in a private area (e.g. shower room floor) is a valid compromise.

Slip Hazards

The employer has a valid point about wet floors.

  • Your Duty: You must dry the floor if you splash water. Leaving a puddle is a genuine safety risk to colleagues.
