Ramadan Night Shifts: Can I swap?
Why many Muslims prefer night shifts during Ramadan, and how to request this as a reasonable adjustment.
Why Night Shifts?
For many observing Ramadan, working nights is easier because:
- Eat and Drink: You can eat and drink during the shift (between Sunset and Dawn).
- Sleep: You can sleep during the day while fasting, reducing the feeling of hunger/thirst.
Is it a Reasonable Adjustment?
Requesting a temporary temporary change to shift patterns for one month is a classic Reasonable Adjustment.
If spaces are available
If there is a night shift rota and there are spaces (or people willing to swap), refusing this request would likely be Direct or Indirect Discrimination.
If no night shift exists
If the business closes at 5pm, you obviously cannot work nights. The request must be practical.
If there is a waiting list
If night shifts are popular (e.g., they pay a premium), can you jump the queue?
- Strictly speaking: No, religious belief doesn’t trump other contracts.
- In practice: Employers often allow temporary swaps because it benefits them to have an alert, fed employee on nights rather than a tired, hungry one on days.
How to Ask
“To maintain my performance and health during Ramadan, I request a temporary swap to the night shift rota. This will allow me to remain hydrated and energized while working. I am happy to swap back immediately after Eid.”
